11/08/2004 Archived Entry: "Amen, to that!"
Amen, to that, Huly! It's been so surreal since Bush got put back into office. Things are going to give and I hope it doesn't totally fuck us all over.
It's been a long while. I don't know why people don't message me anymore, maybe I'm partially to blame. All I know is it sucks not to even get an email in my inbox from something other than a spambot. My friend Matt at least answered my email (of which I need to reply to!) and it was nice to hear from him again. I hadn't talked to him in, I think, an entire year or more. His baby is adorable, he even sent me a picture of him walking.
I got to talk to my cousin yesterday, that was nice. Unfortunately, I was in the middle of installing some shelves and she was with friends at a restaurant, so we both had to cut it short after a while. It was good to hear she was doing well and she sounded happier than she had been last year.
Yesterday, John and I got a lot of stuff done. We replaced two of the light fixtures in our house successfully! You wouldn't think this was a big deal until you realised how old the house is. I'm talking, so old that it -used- to have a coal bin. I shit you not, the old flip-lid for it is visible from the driveway. You can tell it had been rebuilt because the walls and the piping are extremely old and the wiring is make-shift. This makes for really tricky home improvements. My next home improvement will be the bathroom. I'm going to repaint it with a sealant and re-caulk the tub. I plan on working my way from the bathroom, to the hallway, and then into the kitchen if all goes well. For three years I've known how I want to re-wallpaper the kitchen but I've never gotten the chance to. Hopefully this year I'll finally be able to.
It's incredible, I have to watch what I say around the office. At least two people in the cubicle I share with three voted Bush. On the day of election, one of them was saying all sorts of things about how bad the Kerry voters were and tires were being slashed at the polling stations. How much you wanna bet it was Bush voters holding up Kerry signs and doing frame-jobs? You know, I think people really -would- sink that low. And over something as petty as a president. I -still- think presidents, as part of the government whole, should be regarded as petty. They have a very short term at office, even things they veto might still be passed through, and they are NOT worth hurting other people over. I think the biggest "terrorists" are the people who cheat, lie, and mud sling heavily during elections. Instead of actually doing something beneficial, they litter their yards with signs, plaster bumper stickers everywhere, wear little pins with a donkey or an elephant, and seek to label every single person they come across. Democrat, Republican, Conservative, Liberal.... I think all these terms should be eliminated and replaced with percentages. It'd be one less thing to discriminate people against.
Contraversial issues are primarily marked as contraversial for two things - religion and cultural upbringing. We've got to stop drawing lines, color coding, and placing labels on everyone. It's never going to happen, I'm sure, but the moment we do that then that's the time we'll actually progress instead of setting ourselves back technologically and as a species. In fact, the only thing that makes us all shut up and behave is a natural disaster. How messed up is that? It takes hundreds of people -dying- for us to shut the hell up about our stupid little problems and say "Oh, shit, if we don't work together we'll all die!"
I just wish for once people could see the bigger picture here - we're running out of natural resources, we need to get off this rock and have a good look around, and there's no way we'll be able to unless we tag-team it.
I don't think I've been able to honestly smile or feel any hope since November 2nd. I just hope Bush wakes the hell up because I -don't- like hating people. I don't -want- to hate people, but damn...! It's been easier and easier to do it as of late. This isn't just the USA we're talking about anymore, what we do here other people are going to feel in other countries. I hope to whatever god is out there that he realises that.
