This is both funny and sad. Remember when I said I had Umbala to look forward to? Turns out the patch server went ker-flooey and now Sakray can't get Umbala yet. YEEARGH!!
I don't feel as shitty as I did yesterday, oddly enough, even in the dread that we'll have another botched president for four more years. It was my fear, but I've got one comfort. After four years we won't have to put up with it again. John and I must've spent an hour talking about the impact this election and this administration, both previous and inevitable, have on us now. We didn't used to care about it when we were growing up, for one we couldn't vote and for another it didn't feel like we would actually be irreparably set back both technologically and historically.
We looked back on the era we were children in, that was primarily the Reagan administration. "99 Luft Balloons", that kind of thing, it all felt like a game. Particularly with movies like "Back to the Future II", the future looked promising! Technology was our toy, new things to discover, space age technology looked so wonderful! I wish there was some way to bring that joy back.
What we need is someone like Walt Disney and it makes me want to cry. There is no one to bridge the gap between the generations like Walt did, no one to play out ideas of what the future would bring like he had done with Tomorrowland. All that's left are fragments, people but no one driving force.
There was an incredible drive in the 1980's, all through it. The Human Genome project, PC's, internet, communication. If we had continued at that pace, by 2005 we probably would already have made whole cities functioning off fusion reactors.
I think what makes me sad most is that we're procrastinating in things we should not be procrastinating on and pushing for petty things to pop up first.
